- Re-organized the IT department and built a KM organization from the ground up

As CKO, my role at Reed Smith was multi-disciplinarian, overseeing a budget of nearly 30M and global team of over 80 people with 5 direct reports in the areas of Knowledge Management, Client Value (Pricing, AFA & Legal Project Management), Library & Research Services, and Litigation Support.
In this role, I was responsible for sourcing new business from Client Value efforts valued at over USD$20M, oversaw an increase in the billable revenue of the Litigation Support function by 110% to over USD$5M, and delivered efficiencies across various fixed fee client portfolios resulting in increased realization (from 55% to 75% in 7 months). Reed Smith’s intranet portal was selected by legal industry peers at the conference, who voted on award winners from a field that was narrowed to four finalists from more than 100 submissions. The system was hailed for its innovative integration of Recommind and WestKM along with a myriad of unique features and clean, simple interface.

The Reed Smith project team was led by Tom Baldwin, Reed Smith’s Chief Knowledge Officer, and Lisa Gianakos, Reed Smith’s Director of Knowledge Management. The portal leverages OneView Connect software to integrate internal and external information sources, and also provide targeted content to lawyers and staff. The targeted content requirements were based in part upon user personas created by Janders Dean, another technology vendor. The resulting portal is an intuitive way for users to find critical business information and collaborate with each other, connecting more than 3,200 people in 26 different countries.

This project really was a classic example of IT and Marketing working together. Our Chief Marketing Officer, Vickie Spang, took this idea and ran with it. Without the collaborative efforts of her group and mine, this project would have never been the success it is. My post on this idea months ago kicked started our efforts, but our Marketing group was instrumental in the adoption of blogs here at the firm.
